Southern Grit: Restaurant Branding & Website Design Case Study

Southern Grit was a new Old City restaurant that needed a complete brand system, from identity and menu design to a functional, launch-ready website and lifestyle photography.

This project demonstrates how thoughtful, calm branding and design can support hospitality operators without relying on trends or visual clutter.

The Beginning

I started working with Southern Grit about seven years ago, well before they opened in Knoxville’s Old City. The owner, B.G. DeHart, wanted to bring Southern hospitality into a modern, approachable dining experience, but he didn’t yet have a cohesive restaurant branding or website to support that vision. My first conversation with him was about clarity — how could their branding, menus, website, and photography all tell the same story without getting in the way of the food and atmosphere?

Scope

The engagement quickly grew to cover everything from brand identity and Knoxville restaurant branding to website design, menus, and lifestyle/food photography. Specifically:

  • Brand identity system: logo refinement, color palette, and typography for a cohesive hospitality brand
  • Website design & UX: showcasing menus, hours, location, and intuitive navigation for diners
  • Menu design and supporting print collateral for in-house and takeout experiences
  • Lifestyle and food photography: professionally styled imagery for web and social media

Challenge

Southern Grit’s challenge was clear: create a brand that felt rooted in Southern tradition without relying on cliches or kitsch. Menus and content needed to be functional for both in-house guests and online visitors, while the photography and overall look needed to convey warmth, authenticity, and approachability — all part of building a strong hospitality brand identity.

Approach

We began by clarifying the brand voice and visual identity. The goal was consistency without rigidity: every touchpoint, from the website to menus and photography, had to feel like part of the same story while maintaining room for seasonal freshness and variation.

Branding: Defined tone, color palette, typography, and identity elements that endure across all touchpoints. Website: Designed a clean, launch-ready restaurant website with clear access to menus, hours, and location information. Photography: Art-directed and shot lifestyle and food imagery highlighting atmosphere, culinary detail, and hospitality experience. Collateral: Menus and print materials consistent with the brand identity, supporting a cohesive dining experience.

Results

The result is a cohesive brand that supports Southern Grit’s mission while leaving space for the food and hospitality to take center stage. Seven years later, the brand and website remain relevant, usable, and visually compelling — a testament to building clarity and structure into the design from day one.

  • Cohesive visual identity across digital and print touchpoints, reinforcing the Knoxville restaurant branding.
  • Website that makes menu exploration simple and intuitive for diners.
  • Photography that conveys atmosphere and quality without overpowering the dining experience.
  • Consistent branding that has endured for years, supporting ongoing business growth and guest loyalty.
